The Master's academic track will be structured into Knowledge and Competence Blocks (KCBs) in line with the French Registry of professional certification sheet for 'Marine Sciences' Masters. The Physical and Biogeochemical Oceanography (OPB) pathway will offer two typical options: 1) Physical coupling and biogeochemistry, and 2) Biogeochemistry and biodiversity. The Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology (OBEM) pathway will offer three: 1) Dynamics and functioning of ecosystems, 2) Conservation and management, and 3) Biology of organisms and marine ecology.

Aims

The « Sciences de la mer » master's degree aims to train future managers who are familiar with the workings of offshore and inshore marine écosystèmes. The aim of the course is to help students acquire a scientific background and master the tools for observing and analysing the marine environment in general. The students trained will be able to develop autonomous research and/or development activities. More specifically, this requires an understanding of the mechanisms that govern the functioning of natural marine systems in a context of global change, subject to disturbances linked in particular to anthropogenic activities.

Targeted students

Students mainly come from Life and Earth Sciences or Life Sciences bachelor's degrees, but may also come from Chemistry or Physics or Physics-Chemistry bachelor's degrees. In particular, this master's programme follows on from the SVT bachelor's degree in marine science. We also receive a number of students from engineering colleges and students from other countries.

Structure and organisation

The programme is organised into 4 semesters. It is structured around a common core in the first semester of Master 1 (S1) and a specialisation from the second semester of Master 1 (S2 to S4). Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, practical work and field trips (coastal land and boat trips). This Master's degree is strongly backed by research. The entire teaching staff is involved in numerous national and international research projects related to marine science disciplines. The University of Aix-Marseille is ranked 34th in oceanography in the Shanghai ranking (2023).

Knowledge to be acquired

These are those that enable students to gain an understanding of how marine ecosystems function and the role of the ocean in the functioning of the planet. They cover various aspects depending on the pathway: hydrodynamics, fluid mechanics, natural water chemistry, organic chemistry and geochemistry, biology of organisms and populations, marine ecology, mathematical and numerical modelling.

The links with the socio-economic world exist essentially through the involvement of professionals in the teaching units of the course and through the supervision of a work placement in Master 2.

The Master's programme is supported by the Institut Méditerranéen d’Océanologie (MIO), whose research focuses on the various fields of océanography. Other joint research units of the OSU Institut Pythéas are also involved in the Master's programme, in particular the IMBE for its work on marine diversity and interactions with global change. The course also benefits from strong collaborations with IRD units and IFREMER's Mediterranean centre.
