EC Linguistics : sociophonology

The aim of this course will be to explore the relationship between the use of language and social factors. An introduction to the basic concepts of sociolinguistics will be followed by case studies of various forms of language variation both within the British Isles and beyond: American English, Australian English, etc., and also New Englishes. Language and social register will also be examined and the relationship between standard and non-standard forms of English.
