This course aims to give students a broad understanding of the
main events which shaped British society, politics and culture in
the early modern era (16th-18th centuries). We will take a close
look at some of the key events of that period – such as the
Henrician Reformation, the Elizabethan era, the Civil Wars, the
Republic, the Glorious Revolution, the Hanoverians and their
Jacobite opponents, the industrial and agricultural revolutions –
and we will explore how those selected harbingers of change
shaped British politics, culture and religion.
Seminars In seminars, students will work on primary documents, both
textual and iconographical which they will analyze (thereby
perfecting the methodology of the textual commentary).
Students are expected to have worked on the documents given
in the course booklet each week and to participate actively in
seminars
