The goal of this course is to show the various implications of the size and texture of objects (particles, filaments, porous solids, amorphous solids …) onto their physical, chemical, or reactivity properties. Insights will be given on some theoretical aspects associated to these unexpected and generally surprising behaviours. Through the description of examples lying at this “classical”-“quantum” interface, we will show how the concept of “nano” is presently opening new areas in various domains such as energy storage, sensors, mechanics, catalysis, optics, electronics, metallurgy … The different strategies for the preparation of these nano-objects will be described as well as the characterization means adapted to their size.
